Adult stem cells are working

ADULT Stem cells are working and showing promise all over the place. See a study being started here.

Why do they insist on creating and killing babies when we have something that is actually showing promise. Oh wait.... "it is for the children"

MD house approves baby stem cell research

Maryland House Approves Bill That Would Provide $23M Annually for Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research in State

They say that they are going to use the money from the tobacco settlement. If I remember correctly, they said they were going to use the tobacco money for the children. I did not realize that they would use the money to create children and then rip them apart.

Please notify you state representative before the MD senate passes thier bill. Mr. Ehrlich will sign the darn thing.

Housebill (HB 1183) and the senate (SB 751)

On the same page they are talking about (HB 398) which is for a fetal homicide bill.
This is only for "viable" fetuses that could live outside the womb. The pro-death supports are concerned about supporting this because is could have an effect on the death on demand healthcare for children.

Sqeaky clean

Squeaky Clean is a utility on the Kiwi Logger site. It "locks" up your mouse whil you clean the crud out of your mouse so you do not accidentally click anything.
Of course this is not needed on the new optical mice.

Brave New World Revisited

via Rerum Novarum

It's a Brave New World after Terri Schiavo dies

"Where have those who oppose the death penalty been? Where have
the people from Not In Our Names gone? Just where have all the
flowers gone? Their silence says more about who they are and what
they believe than any amount of rhetoric."

Why we Don't Starve Humans

Here is a good interview with Dr. Chris Kahlenborn...read the whole thing.

If a person has an injury, such as a chemical burn of the esophagus, and cannot eat any more, everyone would say that the person should be given a stomach tube. Yet when you have a person with Alzheimer’s, some people will say that they have lived their life and can slowly die of starvation by failing to place a stomach tube. When you do that, you’re basing the entire decision upon intellectual ability and worth. If you take IQ out of it, you would treat the two people the same. If you argue that someone can’t process the food otherwise, they should be given a stomach tube, then you need to give it to everyone. I’ve never seen anyone who could challenge that argument.

At the core of Reality is Joy

A good post from Mark Shea "at the core of Reality is Joy".
For you very slow readers (like me) it is worth every bit of the the five minutes.

The Cult of IPOD

This morning I was on the way home from church and "the cult of the IPOD" flashed in my head. Now many think of this as the crazy people who treat Steve Jobs like a rock star and think the only real technology runs on Apple products. Well....I am not talking about them.

I am talking about how the world is creating the inability to reflect in silence. You have the radio on, or the TV, or the video game....and now the "ipod", or opod like device. I know we have had walkmans around for ages but the new storage devices take it to another level. I see kids walking together but they are both wearing these things. We are bombarded by noise all day long and we RUN AWAY FROM THE SILENCE. The silence that caused us to reflect upon ourselves and God. It is a silence that is hard to take at times. However, it is silence and reflection in prayer that draws us closer to God.

C. S. Lewis in his Screwtape Letters puts some words in the mouth of the devil that bring out this truth more forcefully than a library of books ever could do. This is what he has the devil say: "Music and silence–how I detest them both! How thankful we should be that ever since our father (that is Lucifer) entered hell no square inch of infernal space and no moment of infernal time has been surrendered to either of those abominable forces, but all has been occupied by, Noise–Noise, the grand dynamism, the audible expression of all that is exultant, ruthless and virile–Noise which alone defends us from silly qualms, despairing scruples and impossible desires. We will make the whole universe a noise in the end. We have already made great strides in this direction as regards the earth. The melodies and silences of heaven will be shouted down in the end."

St. Bernard advises: "If you are preparing the ear of the spirit for the voice of God, a voice sweeter than honey and the honeycomb, then flee external cares; so that when your inner sense is disentangled and free, you may say with the prophet Samuel, 'speak Lord, for your servant is listening' (I Kings 3:10). For the voice of God does not speak amid the din and bustle of the world, nor is it heard in any public gathering. Rather secret counsel seeks to be heard also in secret. And so because of this, happiness will be given to us if we listen to God in solitude."

Once Mother Teresa was asked, "Mother what do you consider the most important thing in the training of your sisters?" And she answered, "Silence. Interior and exterior silence. Silence is essential in a religious house. The silence of humility, of charity, the silence of the eyes, of the ears, of the tongue. There is no life of prayer without silence." And then at another time she expanded on her philosophy of silence. She explained that "we need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. See how nature, the trees, the flowers and the grass grow in perfect silence." Finally, she added that without doubt "God is the friend of silence. His language is silence. And he requires us to be silent to discover him. We need, therefore, silence to be alone with God, to speak to him, to listen to him and to ponder his words deep in our hearts. We need to be alone with God in silence to be renewed and to be transformed. For silence can give us a new outlook on life. In it we are filled with the grace of God, which makes us do all things with joy."

I did a google search on "screwtape letters silince" and got the above quotes from here

Reflections on the TIME Cover Story

Pastor Mark D. Roberts is doing a series on The Protestant Mary? Reflections on the TIME Cover Story.
He is disagreeing with a Time in many ways about the story but adds what he feels is the "real" story. He also has a quick entry about The Passion Recut that is good.

Editorials

Two local editorials to make you think. I know both of these gentlemen.

The first is about Terri Schiavo
The Herald-Mail ONLINE: "Let parents assume care"

The second is about the spread of HIV/AIDS. Something needs to be done. Telling kids how to have sex in 6th grade with condoms is not a good starting point. (which I think I will start to call "Condemns for Kids"). There is no surer way to increase all the STD's then to tell kids to think sex first. Instead of Abstinence which is more likely for them to have a healthy childhood/college time.

The Herald-Mail ONLINE: "HIV victims need compassion, tattoo"

You may or may not agree with the second part, but we definately need to talk honest about HIV.

It is time to take the threat of HIV seriously. A compassionate and serious solution must preserve the dignity of those infected while truly helping to prevent the spread of the disease in an effective way.

Powerline fisks todays New York Times article on Terri Schiavo here.

I pray that she is not "allowed" to be starved to death.

If we were going to starve a dog to death, we would get 3 months in jail for the attempt.
Hat tip to Tim Blair for the funny review of presidential photos here.
