Christmas closes Chuches

Here is a Fox news story that indicates many megachurches are not going to have a service on Christmas day which happens to also be a Sunday. Being a Catholic, Christmas Day has always meant going to church to celebrate the birth of Jesus our Lord and Savior. However, I know that many churches do not have services on Christmas if it does not fall on a Sunday. I can deal with that even though I may not fully understand it. But if Christmas falls on a Sunday, I figured everyone would "play it up" instead of just playing.

This is the statement that you get from Willow Creek Community Church:

"If our target and our mission is to reach the unchurched, basically the people who don't go to church, how likely is it that they'll be going to church on Christmas morning?" she said.

In the Catholic Church, that is the time to reach the unchurched. We have a special name for them, "C&E Catholics". They feel comepelled to show up on Christmas and Easter. That is why there are usually more Masses scheduled for Christamas and Easter. Christmas is a great time to reach out to the C&E, the boyfriend/girlfreind that comes along with the family, etc.

Another church, North Point Community Church, is not having services on New Years day. I know they take their football seriously in the south, but this is a little ridiculous. They do not mention football as the reason but I wasn't about to make a joke about them out drinking all night :-) Closed for two Sundays!! Doesn't St. Paul have something to say about failing to meet together?

Katelyn Sills could use a little encouragement

Please go HERE and read her story. Then maybe say something nice in her comment box.

As described by Mark Shea
Katelyn Sills tells the full story of the courageous woman (her mom) who notified Bishop Weigand that a teacher in her Catholic High School was also a stooge for Murder Inc. Naturally, the open-minded apostles of peace and tolerance are flooding this young woman's combox with amazingly vicious hate mail. She's going to face a lot of heat at her school. Drop her a note in the combox and let her know she's not alone in this fight.

What is your daughter wearing for Holloween?
Maybe THIS! I would not be very nice to a parent if I new they had their daughter wear it. I would say something like "You must be the most ___ stupid ___ ___ parent and a ___ ____ to boot for ___ letting you sweet little daughter wear that __ ___ ___!!!!!"

BTW! My daughter won a contest for her costume and should be in this Sunday's paper.
Her costume should be able to clean up this mess :-)

Every Family should have these

A few years ago I got a great deal on all three of these biblical themed playsets. They come with a book, tape, and several toy figures.
The person who managed the great deal for me stated that his kids listened to the tapes everywhere they went and they played with them all the time.

How well did it turn out? The Daniel and David tapes have been played so much they are going to where out soon. I know both have been listened to 100+ times each. The books are VERY sturdy and well made. They figures are also excellent.
The Nativity set is awesome and we bring it out each year during Christmas time.

Go HERE to check them out.

100% recommended for all :-)

Protestant Pills

Amy Welborn's site has some information in addition to the article in Christianity Today about Gov. Mitt Romney's decision to Veto a bill that would enable the "morning-after" pill to be dispensed without a prescription. (Ed.....Did you notice that you still need to jump through hoops to let a kid have an aspirin in school, but not to kill their baby). Amy goes on to state in many ways in which there are changes happening in how protestants are viewing "the pill".

Mitt says "...I have spoken with medical professionals to determine whether the drug contemplated under the bill would simply prevent conception or whether it would also terminate a living embryo after conception. Once it became clear that the latter was the case, my decision was straightforward."

PPP Planned Parenthood Priestess

This is just too much. I think I need a shower after reading this article. It oozes with spiritual meaninglessness.

Her position is rare — one of five within the national Planned Parenthood organization — and seemingly oxymoronic, violating the stereotypical separation of church and choice.

Wonder why you have spyware..ban kid sites

Hat tip to instapundit.

This article showes how well known kid sites are targetting your pc's with spyware/adware.

Children were the biggest target for spyware makers, by far. The trip to several kids' sites installed a whopping 359 pieces of adware on Symantec's PCs, five times more than the nearest category rival, travel. Popup ads proliferated on the machines after that, making them virtually unusable.
I bet they would take legal action against us if we decided to put stuff on the sites machines :-(

No wonder my pc stays fairly clean :-) I don't let the kids use it.

Worse than smoking but it is preferred

per President Aristotle
Satinover here offers more evidence for what I would take to be a key part of an Aristotelian critique of...X... conduct (at least among men): it is contrary to natural law, and it places those who practice it at severe medical risk. To put it differently, the medical risk involved in ...X... conduct is vastly greater than that involved with cigarette smoking. Yet no one would accuse those who try to end smoking of being bigoted or prejudiced against smokers.
I put the X's in go see what it is here.

Church and Politics

There are news articles like this from CNN about a church in Waynesville NC where my sister lives. It even made papers in the UK. It is real funny how a small paster makes a statement saying abortion is wrong and may have leaned torward a canidate that did not believe in abortion. The press go nuts with the false seperation of church and state thing.

BUT.........

When Kerry seemed to be campaigning at a different church every Sunday during the campaign, the MSM covered it just like it was just another campaign stop with no indignation over him talking it up in a church. The likes of Jesse "shakedown" Jackson and Rev. Al "not-so" Sharpton were stumping on pulpits for Kerry and no one said a thing. I guess as long as you sacrifice a baby at the alter, you can campaign how you want.

Thomas Sowell on illegal immigration

Thomas Sowell chimes in on Illegal Immigration:
Virtually every job in the country is work that Americans will not do, if the pay is below a certain level. And the pay will not rise to that level so long as illegal immigrants -- "undocumented workers" -- are available to work for less.

Even those who write editorials about how we need Mexicans to do work that Americans will not do would not be willing to write editorials for a fraction of what they are being paid. If Mexican editorial writers were coming across the border illegally and taking their jobs, maybe the issue would become clearer.
This is a must read.

...and here are some recent quotes from good ole Thomas :-)

How can you be an "insurgent" in someone else's country? Yet despite the fact that the wave of terrorism in Iraq is led by an outside terrorist who is murdering Iraqis, our media still calls his terror campaign an "insurgency."

Everyone is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty -- in a court of law. But we cannot just mindlessly repeat words outside the context in which they apply. If you discovered that your spouse had been secretly checking into motels with someone else, would you presume innocence until proven guilty?

If the government gave a $5,000 subsidy to anyone who buys an automobile, do you doubt that the price of automobiles would go up -- perhaps by $5,000? Why then does no one see any connection between government subsidies to college students and rising tuition?

People who oppose the privatization of Social Security call it "a risky scheme." But is anything more risky than turning money over to politicians and hoping that they won't spend it before you retire? They have been spending the "trust fund" for decades.

Time and again, over the centuries, price controls have produced three things: shortages, quality deterioration and black markets. Why would anyone want any of those things with pharmaceutical drugs?

A Jihad that is not there....but you better be scared

When Columnists Cry 'Jihad' by John McCandlish Phillips is an interesting article relating to the names given to the Christian Right and the revision of American History.

Maryland closes classrooms to parents

I heard about this on the G. Gordon Liddy show yesterday on the way the pharmacy. I was going to write about it but Powerline has already done it here. The screw-al policy is for the school to have the classrooms open for parents to know what is going on. Since they are teaching the kids about the 9-types of families, it is too much for the parents to be able to understand. (yes I said NINE)

From powerline
As I mentioned, this is a "pilot" program. A "citizens advisory committee" is supposed to collect feedback from students, teachers, and parents and make a recommendation to the school board as to whether to implement the program county-wide. Which makes it seem particularly odd that parents will not be allowed to observe the program in action. Moreover, Michelle Turner of the Citizens for Responsible Curriculum says that teachers are refusing to supply parents with copies of the curriculum or the course resource materials. This looks like the nanny state with a twist -- a nanny who is partial to alternative life-styles
This is something to be concerned about.....and not only Maryland.

Terri's final moments

Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life tells of the final day of Terri Schindler-Schiavo.

Please read all of An Eywitness Account . Here is something you will not hear from the MSM.

I told Terri she has many people around the country and around the world who lover her and are praying for her. She looked at me attentively. I said, "Terri now we are going to pray together, I want to give you a blessing, let's say some prayers." So I laid my hand on her head. She closed her eyes. I said the prayer. She opened her eyes again at the end of the prayer. Her dad leaned over to her and said, "OK Terri now here comes the tickle," because he has a mustache. She would laugh and smile and after he kissed her I saw her return the kiss. Her mom asked her a question at a certain point and I heard her voice. She was trying to respond. She was making sounds in response to her mother's question, not just at odd times and meaningless moments. I heard her trying to say something but she was not, because of her disability, able to articulate the words. So she was responsive.

Bishop backs Planned Parenthood

The Anchoress has an not so suprising article that starts out like this:

Planned Parenthood should target “people of faith” to promote abortion rights and comprehensive sex education, the Episcopal Church’s first openly homosexual bishop told a gathering in the District yesterday.
The more I analyze this...it just makes me sick. What were they thinking (they weren't..Ed) when they made this guy a bishop. If Anglican Church continues to accept this, I sure hope the African Anglican church follows through and splits. Then at least they will retain some credibility.

Pope John Paul the Great

I stayed away from posting since the death of John Paul II (JPII) because I did not know what to write. How do I summerize a man who has touched millions of peoples lives in a positive way. I will keep it brief and simple and look at an area that affected me..... and I hope that his influence will show in future udates.

The following are two quotes by and referencing Pope John Paul II.
" 'Life' is one of the most beautiful titles which the Bible attributes to God"
Pope John Paul message to the Pontifical Acadamy of Sciences, 1996
George Weigel starts off one recent column with this:
For all its diversity of accomplishment and complexity of thought, the pontificate of Pope John Paul II was a series of variations on one great theme: Jesus Christ is the answer to the question that is every human life.

JPII was a Pope that pointed to Life. He pointed to The Life ... as in John 14:6 ....Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me....
He was Christocentic in his message.

JPII Promoted "Culture of Life" and coined the phrase "Culture of Death" to accurately discribe the hedonistic abortion-one-demand and euthanasia (spelled getridoftheuselessbreathers) supporters. I can not think of a single person that promoted all stages of life more than JPII with the exception of the Jesus the Christ.
His encyclical the Gospel of Life , that reflects on the Value and Inviolability of Human Life, has increased my understanding of life at ALL stages to a whole new level. I suggest everyone read it (including non-Catholics), you will be challenged on life issues. JPII lived this to his last hour and is an example to all of us.

He has many other encyclicals that I still want to read. I am in the middle of Splendor of Truth which I am ready to recommend to all....again :-)

UPDATE on the Life issues thing :
TheAnchoress has about mass euthanasia in Britian.
Pope Paul VI was eerily prescient when he wrote Humanae Vitae - he drew the link from birth control to abortion to infanticide to euthanasia. I didn’t believe it for a long time. When I was a teenager, I remember thinking of it as mere Italian prudishness. But only forty years later, we have seen the establishment of the Culture of Death, and we can trace the tread. How quickly it unspooled!

Even in countries which are only recently embracing birth control, as in Ireland, we are seeing the immediate change of priorities, from family and stability, to materialism and worldliness.

And of course, some of this has been helped along by both the exorbitant cost of medical care in long-term facilities (let’s take out Grandma before our inheritance is eaten up by these fees), and on the other side by socialized medicine that has discouraged the best and the brightest from entering medicine. Socialism breeds mediocrity in everything it touches - it does not encourage excellence.

Why we Don't Starve Humans

Here is a good interview with Dr. Chris Kahlenborn...read the whole thing.

If a person has an injury, such as a chemical burn of the esophagus, and cannot eat any more, everyone would say that the person should be given a stomach tube. Yet when you have a person with Alzheimer’s, some people will say that they have lived their life and can slowly die of starvation by failing to place a stomach tube. When you do that, you’re basing the entire decision upon intellectual ability and worth. If you take IQ out of it, you would treat the two people the same. If you argue that someone can’t process the food otherwise, they should be given a stomach tube, then you need to give it to everyone. I’ve never seen anyone who could challenge that argument.

The Cult of IPOD

This morning I was on the way home from church and "the cult of the IPOD" flashed in my head. Now many think of this as the crazy people who treat Steve Jobs like a rock star and think the only real technology runs on Apple products. Well....I am not talking about them.

I am talking about how the world is creating the inability to reflect in silence. You have the radio on, or the TV, or the video game....and now the "ipod", or opod like device. I know we have had walkmans around for ages but the new storage devices take it to another level. I see kids walking together but they are both wearing these things. We are bombarded by noise all day long and we RUN AWAY FROM THE SILENCE. The silence that caused us to reflect upon ourselves and God. It is a silence that is hard to take at times. However, it is silence and reflection in prayer that draws us closer to God.

C. S. Lewis in his Screwtape Letters puts some words in the mouth of the devil that bring out this truth more forcefully than a library of books ever could do. This is what he has the devil say: "Music and silence–how I detest them both! How thankful we should be that ever since our father (that is Lucifer) entered hell no square inch of infernal space and no moment of infernal time has been surrendered to either of those abominable forces, but all has been occupied by, Noise–Noise, the grand dynamism, the audible expression of all that is exultant, ruthless and virile–Noise which alone defends us from silly qualms, despairing scruples and impossible desires. We will make the whole universe a noise in the end. We have already made great strides in this direction as regards the earth. The melodies and silences of heaven will be shouted down in the end."

St. Bernard advises: "If you are preparing the ear of the spirit for the voice of God, a voice sweeter than honey and the honeycomb, then flee external cares; so that when your inner sense is disentangled and free, you may say with the prophet Samuel, 'speak Lord, for your servant is listening' (I Kings 3:10). For the voice of God does not speak amid the din and bustle of the world, nor is it heard in any public gathering. Rather secret counsel seeks to be heard also in secret. And so because of this, happiness will be given to us if we listen to God in solitude."

Once Mother Teresa was asked, "Mother what do you consider the most important thing in the training of your sisters?" And she answered, "Silence. Interior and exterior silence. Silence is essential in a religious house. The silence of humility, of charity, the silence of the eyes, of the ears, of the tongue. There is no life of prayer without silence." And then at another time she expanded on her philosophy of silence. She explained that "we need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. See how nature, the trees, the flowers and the grass grow in perfect silence." Finally, she added that without doubt "God is the friend of silence. His language is silence. And he requires us to be silent to discover him. We need, therefore, silence to be alone with God, to speak to him, to listen to him and to ponder his words deep in our hearts. We need to be alone with God in silence to be renewed and to be transformed. For silence can give us a new outlook on life. In it we are filled with the grace of God, which makes us do all things with joy."

I did a google search on "screwtape letters silince" and got the above quotes from here

Editorials

Two local editorials to make you think. I know both of these gentlemen.

The first is about Terri Schiavo
The Herald-Mail ONLINE: "Let parents assume care"

The second is about the spread of HIV/AIDS. Something needs to be done. Telling kids how to have sex in 6th grade with condoms is not a good starting point. (which I think I will start to call "Condemns for Kids"). There is no surer way to increase all the STD's then to tell kids to think sex first. Instead of Abstinence which is more likely for them to have a healthy childhood/college time.

The Herald-Mail ONLINE: "HIV victims need compassion, tattoo"

You may or may not agree with the second part, but we definately need to talk honest about HIV.

It is time to take the threat of HIV seriously. A compassionate and serious solution must preserve the dignity of those infected while truly helping to prevent the spread of the disease in an effective way.
