Christmas closes Chuches

Here is a Fox news story that indicates many megachurches are not going to have a service on Christmas day which happens to also be a Sunday. Being a Catholic, Christmas Day has always meant going to church to celebrate the birth of Jesus our Lord and Savior. However, I know that many churches do not have services on Christmas if it does not fall on a Sunday. I can deal with that even though I may not fully understand it. But if Christmas falls on a Sunday, I figured everyone would "play it up" instead of just playing.

This is the statement that you get from Willow Creek Community Church:

"If our target and our mission is to reach the unchurched, basically the people who don't go to church, how likely is it that they'll be going to church on Christmas morning?" she said.

In the Catholic Church, that is the time to reach the unchurched. We have a special name for them, "C&E Catholics". They feel comepelled to show up on Christmas and Easter. That is why there are usually more Masses scheduled for Christamas and Easter. Christmas is a great time to reach out to the C&E, the boyfriend/girlfreind that comes along with the family, etc.

Another church, North Point Community Church, is not having services on New Years day. I know they take their football seriously in the south, but this is a little ridiculous. They do not mention football as the reason but I wasn't about to make a joke about them out drinking all night :-) Closed for two Sundays!! Doesn't St. Paul have something to say about failing to meet together?
